Beauty and Hairdressers Workers’ Union in Gaza elects a new leadership
Gaza, 19/11/2018 – The Beauty and Hairdressers Workers’ Union in the Gaza Strip held its first conference and elected its new leadership, with the participation of 222 delegates out of 291 members, who have paid their union membership fees, in cooperation with the Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center.
During the conference, the union’s representatives presented the administrative and financial reports of the union for the previous year, since the union’s establishing conference in February 2017. They talked about the work undertaken to spread awareness about union organizing and its importance, disseminate information about the union, recruit affiliates, and raise the issues faced by workers in the sector with decision-makers, such as low wages. They also presented the union’s strategic plan. Conference delegates approved the financial and administrative reports.
They then proceeded to elect a new board of directors for the coming three years, according to the internal statute of the union. The following members were elected: Mayyada Mas’oud, Sabah Joudeh, Asia Kharwat, Hiba Dawrish, Jehan Eyadeh, Ayda Hweileh, Wafa’ Alhaj Ahmed, Amneh Joudeh, Etaf Alfaran.
At the end of the conference, newly elected leaders pledged to work hard to contribute in improving the work conditions of beauty salons workers and hairdressers in Gaza, in cooperation with relevant human rights organizations. During the first meeting of the new board, Mayyada Mas’oud was elected as president of the union.
