Labour inspectors discuss new Law for Occupational Safety & Health Committees & Supervisors at DWRC workshop with unionists.

Ramallah – On 26/08/2019, the Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center in Palestine organized a workshop on the new Law on Occupational Safety and Health Committees and Supervisors to enable unionists to understand the law and contribute in its implementation. Representatives of the labor inspection department presented the law, the reasons for its adoption, and ways labor inspectors will intervene to ensure its implementation.

The workshop was attended by 28 unionists from various unions and sectors. They directed a number of questions about the law and its implementation mechanisms to the Labor Ministry representatives. While the Labor Ministry is still in the process of setting up the framework for training future safety and health supervisors (training by certified centers/institutes is compulsory under the law), the law's scope of application concerns all workplaces, where there are employees to whom the Palestinian Labor Law applies.

Participants from Deir Samet municipality presented the experience in implementing safety procedures in an establishment that recycles plastic waste. At the end of the workshop, union representatives agreed on a plan to implement awareness meetings and training days for union members and workers in their workplaces in the coming days about occupational safety and health topics, the Labor Law, and the Law on Occupational Safety and Health Committees and Supervisors. They also committed to work on the establishment of occupational safety and health committees in workplaces in the coming period.
