In Partnership with the NCOSH in Gaza: DWRC hosts a conference on reconstruction and hazards of the construction sector environment.

Thursday, 16/09/2021 - The Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center in Palestine hosted a conference in Gaza, in partnership with the National Committee for Occupational Safety and Health (NCOSH) in Gaza addressing the issue of reconstruction and hazards related to the construction sector work environment, as part of the project for “Promoting Workers’ Rights to Occupational Health and safety” implemented by DWRC with the support of Misereor through the Katholische Zentralstelle für Entwicklungshilfe.

The conference was attended by 45 female and male representatives of ministries, municipalities, members of the NCOSH, trade unions, the Contractors’ Union, and the Civil Defense.

During the conference, working papers were presented addressing: dangers of rubble, test results in relation to buildings’ waste, the role of the Contractors’ Union when it comes to Gaza’s reconstruction, OSH conditions in the construction work environment & violations, and the role and responsibilities of employers.

The conference participants issued a number of recommendations, including the following: companies working on reconstruction should comply with certain standards and have a plan for guaranteeing occupational safety & health, insurance against work injuries must be provided to all workers, the minimum wage should be implemented in construction projects, a comprehensive occupational safety system should be applied, a safe and hazard-free work environment must be provided, and the role of the media in covering issues related to OSH should be activated.
