The Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center concludes in Gaza a training course on social dialogue funded by the EU

Gaza city – On May 26th 2010, DWRC’s Gaza branch concluded a three-day training course on social dialogue for 19 trainees representing four labor unions; the General Union for Electricity Sector Workers – Gaza branches, Health Service Workers’ Union, the Independent Labor Committees Union and agricultural workers’ committees. This activity forms part of an EU funded project for protecting trade union rights and uniting efforts to influence socio-economic policies.

 

The course included topics on social dialogue, its forms and the basic skills that a negotiator should possess. In addition to familiarizing participants with ILO conventions on right to organize and collective bargaining, Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize Convention, Right of Association and Collective Bargaining Convention. The training also included all types of negotiations with their various levels, bargaining tactics, advantages and obstacles that might happen during the negotiation process and how to form a negotiation team.

Suheir Al-Najar, from the General Union for Electricity Sector Workers, said that the course topic encouraged her to participate and that it represents an opportunity to increase her experience in social dialogue. She acquired new information and benefited from this course.

Ossama Taha, from the Health Service Employees’ Union clarified that his participation was to expand his knowledge and acquire new skills that will be useful for his work as a unionist. He also said that through this course, he increased his knowledge on bargaining skills, social dialogue, selection process and the formation of the negotiating team.

Etidal Abu-Odeh, from the Independent Labor Committees Union assured that the topics that were presented in the training course were important, encouraging and will help in empowering tripartite dialogue between the three elements of production in the Palestinian society, which should lead to an improvement of labor rights.
