The Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center concludes a training course on social dialogue funded by the EU

Ramallah – On May 29th, 2010 DWRC concluded in Ramallah a three-day training course on social dialogue, in which 19 trainees participated. This activity forms part of an EU funded project for protecting trade union rights and uniting efforts to influence socio-economic policies.

Mira Said and Wajih Al-Ayaseh trained about the concept of social dialogue, its objectives in general and for trade unions in particular, types and challenges of social dialogue, what is dialogue in the workplace, what are the means of communication and how they can be used at work. Moreover, they talked about the relationship between social dialogue and trade union organization, explaining the concept of collective bargaining, its levels, stages and objectives, in addition to highlighting the role of social dialogue as a basis for conflict resolution.

Participants were able to develop their knowledge on social dialogue by performing group work on topics discussed during the course. Thus, they had the chance to participate in role playing and brainstorming activities that will help them in understanding the concepts more easily in order to use it at their own work.

Ensaf Al-Awawdeh, Treasurer of the electricity workers’ union in Hebron, said that this is the first time she participates in such a training course. It encouraged her to start negotiating with the administrators in her work place, try different ways in order to achieve her goals and get her demands.

Rami Hermas, from the General Union of Disabled Palestinians, thinks that the subject is very important because it will help you achieve what you want by negotiating, but there should be more training courses on the subject with different levels.
