Ramallah – On June 9th, 2010 DWRC concluded in its Gaza office a training course on statistical analysis, which is part of the project for protecting trade union rights and uniting efforts to influence socio economic policies, funded by the European Union. The three day training course was attended by 18 female and male participants representing 6 unions; Health Services Employees’ Union, General Union for Electricity Sector Workers in Palestine, the Independent Labor Committees Union in Gaza, the Union of Petrochemical Workers, Kindergarten Employees’ Union and Telecom and IT Ministry Employees’ Union.
The training course aims at training the participants on principles and objectives of statistics, statistical terms, statistical categories and beneficiaries, in addition to explaining methods for analyzing statistical figures and how to benefit from statistical data in advocacy work, collective bargaining and when defending workers’ rights, union members and other marginalized groups. It also focuses on improving union leaders’ skills in planning and policy influencing by using statistical data.
Izat Abu Swereh, from the Independent Labor Committees Union said that he participated in this course in order to improve his knowledge and awareness in labor issues, especially in statistical analysis. He assured that he acquired new information and has now the ability to understand and analyze statistical figures published in newspapers, magazines and websites.
Sabreen Al-Khateeb, from the Kindergarten Employees’ Union said that the course enabled her to understand statistical data and know how to apply it in bargaining and advocacy processes.
Ayman Mahmoud, from the General Union for Electricity Sector Workers in Palestine indicated that he is aware of statistical methods, methods of data collection and reading statistical tables.
