DWRC calls on the Palestinian government to reverse its decision to reduce Gaza employees' wages
Gaza, 05/04/2017 - The Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center in Palestine calls on the Palestinian government to reverse its decision to reduce the wages of Palestinian Authority employees in Gaza. DWRC views with extreme concern the Palestinian consensus government’s decision to deduct 30% from Palestinian Authority employees’ wages in Gaza from March 2017 through suspending payment of allowances. This decision affects 42,000 civil and security sector employees.
DWRC considers that the decision contravenes the civil service law and the military service law, especially as it targets employees that have abided with the directives and instructions of the government, which is their employer.
The decision will have disastrous consequences for this large segment of employees (about 14.3% of all employed persons in Gaza), at the economic and social levels. It will negatively affect all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip, whose population is already suffering from high unemployment and poverty rates, among the highest in the world.
DWRC considers that justifications given by the government for its decision lack fairness, since the decision only applies to Gaza Strip employees. Thus, DWRC calls on the Palestinian consensus government to reverse this dangerous decision, which affects the most important right of employees and their families.
