DWRC organizes a workshop on the effects of the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip on economic establishments and the labor force.

The Democracy and Workers' Rights Center organizes a workshop on the effects of the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip in May 2021 on economic establishments and the labor force

Gaza – 8/06/2021 - The Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center implemented a workshop in Gaza on the effects of the 11-day Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip in May 2021 on economic establishments and the labor force in the Gaza Strip, as part of the Center’s ongoing work to monitor violations to which economic establishments have been exposed, the impact on the labor force and the size of economic losses. The workshop was opened and moderated by the unionist Abdel Karim Al-Khalidi. Mona Rostom, DWRC Gaza branch coordinator, spoke about the workshop’s goal, the Center’s vision and required interventions from relevant parties. She emphasized the role of Center and cooperation with various ministries in order to monitor the violations that affected economic facilities and the workforce. She said that the situation requires short and long term intervention programs to provide relief to affected workers, as well as reassessing occupational safety and health plans. She expressed her hopes that the workshop will produce practical recommendations that all parties will seek to implement, and result in projects that will benefit workers and owners of affected economic establishments.

Several workpapers were presented and discussed during the workshop. Eng. Abdel Fattah Abu Musa, General Director of Branch Offices, presented a paper from the Ministry of Economy on the impact of the Israeli aggression on economic establishments. Dr. Wael Thabet, General Director of Planning and Policies, presented a paper by the Ministry of Agriculture on the impact of the aggression on the agricultural sector. Mr. Ayman Abu Karim, Head of the Projects and International Cooperation Unit, presented a paper on the impact of the aggression on the situation of workers. Dr. Maher Al-Taba’a, Director of Public Relations at the Chamber of Commerce, presented a paper about the situation of commercial activities. Finally,  Dr. Salama Abu Zu’aiter, member of the General Secretariat of the Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions, presented a work paper about the role of trade unions after the Israeli aggression.   

Workshop participants contributed to the discussion of the situation, and emitted important recommendations.
