The Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center in Palestine strongly condemns the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

Ramallah, 11/05/2022 - The Democracy and Workers’ Rights Center in Palestine strongly condemns the killing of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by the Israeli occupying forces, while she was covering an Israeli raid in Jenin (occupied West Bank) this morning for Al-Jazeera channel. In the same incident, another journalist, Ali Samodi, was shot in the back, but his condition has been reported as stable.

Her colleagues reported that she was observing all safety measures, while performing her professional duties of reporting from the field. She was wearing her press vest and protective gear, when she was shot in the head with live ammunition by the Israeli armyShireen Abu Akleh was a well-known reporter across the Arab world and a trailblazer in her profession. She inspired generations of young women through her tireless reporting from the field and her high professional standards. Every Palestinian household knows her name and has watched her reports for decades. She was admired and respected. She was always there to tell the world what was happening.

We deeply mourn her loss, and would like to express our sincerest condolences to her family, her friends and colleagues. Her voice will continue to resonate in our minds and our hearts. We would also like to express our best wishes of recovery to journalist Ali Samodi.

This is not a single regrettable incident. There is a constant pattern of targeting of Palestinian and foreign journalists and media agencies by the Israeli occupying forces and Israeli authorities, during or because of their coverage of Israeli violations of the human rights of Palestinians, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories. In 2021, MADA, the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedom, monitored 368 violations of media freedoms by the Israeli occupying Power, including physical assaults, harassment and arrests.

We call upon the international community to ensure that there will be a full and impartial investigation of the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, and the injury of her colleague. We also call upon the international community to take steps to uphold international law and end the regime of impunity that prevails for actions perpetrated by the Israeli occupying Power in violation of international human rights and humanitarian law, including repeated attacks against journalists and press freedoms.
